Research areas include:

marine microbes and marine natural products, marine bioactive metabolites, mariculture of marine medicinal species for drug leads and conservation mariculture. He has been actively involved in disease diagnosis and disease management in marine ornamental fish and shellfishes including shrimps and lobsters.

He has guided research scholars and 25 students have been awarded Ph. D in the areas of Microbiology / Marine Biotechnology / Mariculture, Fisheries - Oceanography and Biology- Microbiology integrated subjects. Many of his research scholars are presently employed as Scientists and faculty members of different Institutions and Colleges /Universities. Several national and international marine researchers have established linkages collaborations for marine research. Principal Investigator of sponsored research projects from DBT; MOEF, ICAR, NATP and NFDB.

Research contributions include:

1. Pioneering work on marine sponge associated bacteria and their useful metabolites including enzymes and other pharmaceutical and antibacterial compounds

2. Marine bacterial symbionts in marine macro algae and their applications

3. Novel antibacterial compounds from marine sources and their application in aquaculture

4. Non-specific defence enhancement among shrimps using marine macroalgal metabolites so as to develop Integrated Disease Management system for sustainable shrimp farming.

5. Development of Bacterin for specific marine ornamental fish-successful against the pathogenic clown fish bacterial pathogen, Serratia marcescens.

6. Bacterin for controlling vibriosis in Etoplus maculatus.

7. Biological control of fish pathogenic bacteria using specific bacteriophages.

8. Culture of marine medicinal species – particularly marine sponges and their symbiotic bacteria.

Innovative programmes developed in higher education and training:

1. New training course/programme on `Shellfish (shrimp) disease investigations’ to the Iranian Fisheries officials at Bushehr, Iran was entirely designed and taught by me with practical programmes in the field and in the laboratory in Iran.

2. New topics of lectures of inter-disciplinary nature involving aquatic microbiology, microbial pathogens, physiology of infected organisms were developed and taught by me for the ‘Post-Graduate Diploma in Aquaculture and Fisheries’ programme conducted in the School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University during 1993-94.

3. Prepared course materials and taught `Fish and Shellfish pathology’ course to the Post Graduate Programme in Mariculture (PGPM) M. Sc/ M.F.Sc and Ph. D students/scholars from 1995 onwards.

4. Prepared new course materials and taught marine biotechnology subjects such as: ‘Bioactive compounds and drugs from marine organisms’, ‘antiviral and antimicrobial compounds’, ‘anti-tumor, anticancer and anti-ageing compounds’ and ‘seaweed products’ for Ph. D course work students of PGPM (1995 to 2006).

5. Two New short term courses on i. Diploma course in Sea Farming/Mariculture and ii. Certificate course in Industry-Oriented Seafood Handling, Processing, Packing and Marketing were designed for the M.S. University.

6. Instrumental in designing a novel PG course in ‘Nanobiotechnology’ as an Industry- University joint M. Sc / M. Tech Programme.

7. Several training programmes on paddy cum fish culture, cage culture of air breating fishes, microbial diseases of fish and shellfish, propagation of protected marine species, farming of fish and lobsters in floating cages and sea farming to mitigate global warming and dwindling fish stocks were organized by in the ICAR institutes as well as in Universities (MKU, CIFE and MSU).
